my imagination's been working overtime but my thoughts always lag behind.
and i drove thru a snowstorm just to wind up at yr door.
but you know i only know how it used to be
i don't know how it is
2 / 3 / 4~!!!
and i've been watching way too much tv
and i wonder what is has been doing to me
and this fucking microphone has been chipping all my teeth
and you are like a shipwreck buried somewhere under the sea.
but you know i don't know how i'm supposed to be
i just know what i am.
but you know i don't know what i'm supposed to be.
i just know that i am.

Roadhouse Disco

i was walking thru the mountains
with nothing on my feet
i was looking for a fountain
i was too afraid to speak
oh, how you once came to me and told me what to do
you said to go get everything and give it all to you
so i did
yes, i did.
so i went to the city
with all of its lights and its smoke
i got dolled up real pretty
just so i wouldn't have to be alone
forty days & forty nights you come to me and smile
you call me on the telephone just to talk a while
about sin
about sin.
so when i saw what was coming
the famine, the death, and the shakes
you said they were but birth pangs
and that i did not have to be afraid.
but late at night you come to me and you grab me by the arm.
i don't know what it means when you say "do not be alarmed".
but i am.
yeah, i am.

I Look For You
02:26

you're a lightning storm lament / wrote my letters in wet cement
and you signed them "Love, Theo".
sacred words on sacred land / took you by your fragile hand
i watched the ambulances go.
and i look for you.
what can i do?
there is snow outside my window and i'm feeling kind of blue
i look for you.
heard you fell right on yr face / disappeared for THREE WHOLE DAYS
hey, what did you do when you were gone?
bats invade the darkened space / crossed a line across my name
i slept with the porch light on.
and i look for you.
what can i do?
there is snow outside my window and i am feeling like a fool
i look for you.
and i wish i could relax / learn to enjoy the game a bit before it ends
the story isn't all that bad / but for memory and clarity they recorded it like that.
and i wrote you notes from a cardboard boat at a college down in the south / but you told me once "it is only love that will ever get you out".
so i look for you.
what CAN i DO?
there is snow outside my window and now i know that i am a fool.
i look for you.

shoestrings

the movie was shown on a screen out in the courtyard.
the audience just yawned and stared down into their coffees.
and i was a boy with a champagne glass on my head.
all of my friends: up to our old tricks again and again and again and again and again.
they call the shots so i call my mother on thursday.
my friends will all laugh when they see my name in the newsreel.
and i'm not a boy, i'm a god with a gun to my head.
and all these loose ends. i'm tying shoestrings again and again and again and again and again.
on a donkey you came you were drunk on a chalice of boxed wine.
the streets are not paved but they'll run red when we are done.
and i'm not a boy i'm a slob with an unending mess.
so what of the rest? i'm starting over again and again and again and again and again.
detectives all run to see the world i've created.
nowhere to be found i escape under cover of nightfall.
and i'm not a boy i'm a dog with a chance to play dead.
if you'd just take my hand we'd haunt those hallways again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again
again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again
again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again
again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again again and again and again and again and again

I Saw A Sign
02:21
|
|||
I once knew a balding child who was never understood when he spoke. His name was known back in the east but out west he went broke. And I would never tell you this so don’t say that I would, but I heard he quit words altogether but he played that guitar good. When my life was on the line I saw a sign.
If the truth is out there you know it cannot be spoke. I thought I heard it once when I was out back for a toke. And I don’t know why I tell you this ‘cause it’s never done me any good but late night flings and mosquito wings are the most misunderstood. When my life was on the line I saw a sign.
Took my time to my way on the top of the mount but I sped on the way down. This cop he pulled us over and he looked just like a clown. Said, “I don’t know what to make of this, looks like you boys’ been making wine.” We hung his guts from the rearview mirror and we sped off right in time.
When my life was on the line I saw a sign.
